Now that gaming is the world’s biggest entertainment form, here’s a look back at the top ten gaming eras throughout history.
1. Early Days
Video games first leapt to the public’s attention in the 1970s with the introduction of the Atari Pong game. Although the game offered a simple black and white format with extremely limited gameplay options, it truly introduced us to the joys of modern gaming.
2. The Arcade Era
But it was with the likes of Space Invaders that the gaming craze took off. Soon, video arcades were established in many towns and cities in the 1980s, where players could compete in a wide range of games that featured new genres such as fighting and racing.
3. Desktop Revolution
Similarly, the 1980s were also the decade that introduced the concept of home computing to many homes. With companies like Amstrad, Spectrum and Commodore providing affordable computers to many homes, there followed a range of titles like Jet Set Willy and Elite that allowed players to enjoy bedroom gaming for the first time.
4. Console Action
However, the rapid rise of the gaming market in the 1980s led to two companies developing their own machines that offered a gaming-only format. The Nintendo SNES and Sega Megadrive truly ushered in the first global gaming era with new iconic characters such as Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog.
5. Portable Gaming
But towards the end of the 1980s, Nintendo saw the future coming early and made efforts to streamline gaming methods with an increased focus on convenience with the introduction of the Gameboy. This iconic device allowed gamers to play the highly-addictive game of Tetris anytime and anywhere.

The early 2000s saw the development of major technology firms such as Sony and Microsoft entering the gaming field with their impressive PlayStation and Xbox consoles. The increased processing power and graphical ability of these devices illustrated the competitiveness in this increasingly lucrative industry.
7. Online Revolution
The effects of the the internet provided many desktop and laptop computers with the edge they needed to compete in the gaming sphere. By allowing computers to be remotely linked together, new games such as World of Warcraft allowed gamers an incredible open-world format and range of playing options.

And finally, it seems that the future is finally here with the advent of virtual reality devices such as Oculus Rift offering a mind-blowing vision of future gaming with an immersive, three-dimensional gaming experience that hints at how immersive our gaming experience will soon be.
