Why Getting Locked in an Escape Room with Your Family Is Fun

Are you looking for a fun night out with family or friends? Look no further than an evening out at an escape room.

Escape rooms are popping up all over the place. They’ve really exploded in the last few years. In 2014, there were only 22 escape room businesses. Now, that number is more than 2,000.

That growth is fueled by the fun and the challenge that escape rooms provide. Read on to learn what is an escape room and why an escape room should be at the top of the list of your next family fun night.

What Is an Escape Room?

Are you wondering what is an escape room? Think of it as a live puzzle or game of Clue. They’re usually one or several large rooms that have a theme to them.

In most escape rooms, you’re in the room with your group and you have 60 minutes to solve a series of puzzles and problems to escape.

Why Escape Rooms Are Great Entertainment

Does the idea of being locked in a room with your family give you the chills? You don’t need to fear that. Escape rooms offer a lot of fun. Look at these reasons why

1. The Challenge

When you first go into an escape room, you’re given the backstory of the room. For example, you’re in a room where you went into a time machine and you went back 200 years in time. You now have to find your way back to current time.

Each room has a theme like a bank heist or you’re in the middle of a chess match. Once you have the backstory, you have the challenge to meet. You have to search the room for clues and solve them.

The challenge and the backstory add to the experience to make it fun and entertaining. It can also stoke the imaginations of your whole family.

2. Think Critically

When you’re with your family,  you want to take part in activities that will engage their minds. It’s so easy to put kids in front of a TV or iPad and call it good.

Escape games force all of you to think critically. There are puzzles and games that you need to solve. They aren’t always easy. It’s a way to have fun and think outside the box.

Escape rooms also teach your kids to think for themselves and ask questions. It’s a necessary skill that many people have lost.

3. You Can Be a Kid, Too!

Do you want to let loose and have fun? Escape rooms often ask that you crawl around and climb things as you look for new clues and puzzles to solve.

When was the last time you did that? Escape rooms give you the chance to be a kid alongside your kids.

4. It’s Low-Tech

Have you ever walked around town and come across a group of people staring down at their phones? They’re not being completely anti-social; they’re playing Pokémon Go.

The fact that they’re all on their phones means that they can easily ignore each other while playing the game.

Escape rooms are pretty low-tech. You don’t need to use your phone to play.

5. Connect and Work Together

How many times have you tried to connect with your family only to find that they’re checking email or text messages?

Escape rooms are great because they’re low-tech, it means that you have to connect and work together to get out of the room. There’s no other way around it.

How to Choose an Escape Room

Are you ready to try an escape room out? Here are a few tips to help you find the right one for your family.

Age Appropriate

For some kids (and adults), getting locked in an escape room for 60 minutes can be a scary prospect. Kids are very impressionable and may take the backstory too literally.

You want to find an escape room that’s appropriate for the ages of your kids. Some escape rooms won’t have anything for kids and are adults only.

Themes and Activities

Escape rooms often have a number of different rooms to choose from. Some are going t be more challenging than others.

Ideally, you want to pick an escape room place that has a fun theme for beginners that should be easy enough to solve and allow your family to get the hang of escape rooms. As you enjoy the first experience, you’ll want to take on other escape rooms that are a little more challenging.

Some escape room businesses will offer other activities on site, too. They might have virtual reality games, bowling, or arcades to extend the fun.

Minimum and Maximum Group Sizes

Escape room establishments often have a minimum or maximum amount of people per room. Usually, the minimum is two. The maximum will vary by establishment.

The sweet spot seems to be six people, which creates an atmosphere where everyone gets a chance to participate and collaborate.

Escape Rooms Are a Great Option for Family Fun

What is an escape room? If you’re looking for a night out with the whole family, an escape room can be the perfect place. It forces you and you whole family, to be challenged and actually work together for a common cause.

That may seem like a bit of a lost art because we spend so much time on our phones. When you choose an escape room to go to in your area, you want to make sure that they put safety and fun first. You’ll want to pick one that offers more than one type of room and a variety of activities.

That will keep everyone entertained and make sure your entire family has a great time.
