Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Travel to Italy

Looking to take a trip this summer? Unsure of where to go? While there are all types of great destinations, one you should consider is Italy.

Italy has a great deal to offer tourists. Not only is it home to some of the most beautiful and historic cities in the world, but to a variety of gorgeous rural areas as well.

Wondering why exactly you should travel to Italy? Here are 10 reasons to do so.

Reasons to Travel to Italy

A trip to Italy offers you an endless list of things to do. However, the primary reasons to go to Italy are:

1. To Immerse Yourself in the Culture of Florence

While everyone has their own preferences, many would tell you that Florence is the best city in Italy. Why? Well, for a number of reasons.

Not only is Florence astoundingly beautiful, but filled with culture and history as well. Characterized by its Renaissance-era architecture, it’s a city preserved in time.

Some of the top sights of Florence include the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Ponto Vecchio, and the Uffizi Gallery. It’s also home to Michelangelo’s famous statue of David.

2. To Visit the Beaches at its Deserted Islands

When people think of Italy, they don’t normally think of deserted islands. However, there are actually a few of these islands located in Italian territory.

While they’re not entirely deserted, the Pelagie Islands provide a low-habitation beach experience unlike any other. Belonging to Sicily, these islands are characterized by white, sandy beaches, clear blue water, and an active fishing scene.

Other deserted islands in Italy include Budelli, Lampione, and Zannone.

3. To Hike the Cinque Terre

One of the most unique areas in Italy is the Cinque Terre region, a region characterized by cliff-dangling, ocean-bordering homes. Colorful, historical, and architecturally impressive, these homes evoke everything that is great about the Mediterranean.

While there are a number of ways to take in the Cinque Terre, we suggest hiking through it. A day spent in the region will be fun, curiosity-stoking, and relaxing, allowing you to take a break from the stresses of the big cities.

4. To Take in the History of Rome

Everyone on the planet knows about Rome. They know its long history, its astounding structures, its timeless culture. It’s the “can’t-miss” city of Italy.

But what makes Rome such a worthwhile vacation destination? Well, we don’t have all day, so we’ll just cover the highlights.

For one, there’s the Colosseum, the 2,000-year-old gladiatorial amphitheater which evokes the ancient Roman Empire at every turn. For two, there’s Vatican City, the unique country-in-a-city that’s home to Saint Peter’s Basilica. For three, there’s the Trevi Fountain, the 18th-century fountain containing a number of historic statues.

Regardless of your tastes and preferences, you’ll love Rome. There’s no other city on earth quite like it.

5. To Enjoy the Native Cuisine

Italian food is world famous. You can eat it in essentially any country in the world. However, there’s nothing quite like eating Italian food in Italy itself. After all, nothing can beat the original.

While you should try all of the obvious selections (pizza, spaghetti, lasagna, etc.), you should also try to leave your comfort zone. There are tons of tasty Italian foods, including risotto, focaccia tortellini, ossobuco, and more.

6. To Experience the Uniqueness that is Pompeii

Remember how we said that there was no other city on earth like Rome? Well, that’s even more true of Pompeii. An ancient city located next to Mount Vesuvius, it was devastated by volcanic ash and pumice in 79 AD.

The result of this? A city preserved in time.

Pompeii contains preserved bodies, preserved infrastructure, and preserved life. It’s just as it was thousands of years ago.

7. To Gaze Upon the Dolomites

If you’re into winter sports, you should consider swinging by the Dolomites. A small section of mountains located in the Alps, the Dolomites are characterized by their sharp, steep, and edgy aesthetics.

Whether you’re hiking through this mountain range, skiing down it, climbing up it, or otherwise, it’s sure to stoke your adrenaline. It’s one of the country’s premier rural hallmarks.

8. To Sample the Wine in Val d’Orcia

As you probably already know, Italy is renowned for its wine. So, if you’re a wine connoisseur yourself, you should consider having a legitimate Italian wine experience.

While the Tuscany region offers a range of different vineyards in a range of different towns, perhaps the best of them exist in Val d’Orcia. Existing since the medieval period, this town sits upon a hill and offers gorgeous views of its surrounding areas.

9. To Ride the Gondolas in Venice

Like Rome and Pompeii, Venice is one of the most unique cities on the planet. What’s so unique about it?

It contains no roads, only canals. As such, the only ways to get around it are by walking or by riding in a gondola, a large boat rowed by a gondolier.

There is a great deal to do and see in Venice. Some of its premier sights include St. Mark’s Basilica, the Rialto Bridge, and Doge’s Palace.

10. To Soak Up the Culture

Italy wears its culture on its sleeve like no other. You can see it in the architecture, taste it in the food, and smell it in the ocean. There’s nothing subdued about it.

If you’re looking to experience a new and exciting culture, Italy is the place to be. This is true whether you’re in the streets of Rome or on the beaches of Venice.
